About Tidal Magazine

Tidal Magazine is an independent print and digital publication. We’re a small and self-funded operation run by volunteers with no commercial partnerships or traditional ad-driven constraints. We have the freedom to take creative risks and spotlight emerging voices on our own terms.

Role Overview

We’re seeking an Executive Editorial Director to oversee all written content for Tidal Magazine across both print and digital. This role will shape the magazine’s tone of voice, commission and manage writers, and ensure that every story meets our editorial standards. The ideal candidate has a sharp editorial eye, a deep understanding of cultural storytelling, and a passion for independent publishing.

You’ll work directly with the Executive Creative Director, Executive Editor, Online Editorial Director and Production Directors.

Key Responsibilities

Define and maintain Tidal’s editorial voice across all written content, ensuring consistency and depth in storytelling.

  • Commission and manage writers for features and profiles across print and digital.

  • Edit and proofread all written content, refining structure, clarity, and impact.

  • Collaborate closely with the creative team to ensure written and visual narratives align.

  • Develop editorial themes and story ideas.

  • Ensure accuracy and factual integrity across all published work.

  • Work with a proofreader ahead of print deadlines.

  • Write heds and deks for all stories.

Who You Are

Passionate: You’re genuinely interested in fashion, culture, emerging talent, and storytelling. You want to help grow a brand with huge potential.

Organized, Detailed and Accessible: You’re not afraid to dive into a Google Doc and pay close attention to the details, stay organized, meet deadlines, and are quick to respond to Slacks and emails.

Eager to Learn: You’re excited about getting hands-on experience, trying out new strategies, and growing your skills in a real-world setting.

Adaptable: Comfortable working in an independent, self-directed environment within a small, collaborative team.

Qualifications

Strong writing and storytelling skills. You may come from magazines, journalism, creative writing, or another content-rich field. What matters most is your editorial judgment, your ability to shape narratives, and your commitment to producing thoughtful, well-crafted stories.

Compensation

While this role is unpaid, interviews and profiles written by the Executive Editorial Director will be paid at our standard freelance rate.
